Brent Matsuda has been training in martial arts for 30 years
Beginning with traditional kung fu and Japanese martial arts before being exposed to Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do (JKD) in 1988. He is one of four instructors in Vancouver certified under Guro Dan Inosanto and the only one that actively teaches JKD along with other arts adopted by Guro Inosanto.
While there are other highly skilled JKD instructors in the area, they receive their training through former students of Guro Inosanto, and do not necessarily maintain the same curriculum required under the Inosanto Academy in Los Angeles. For the purposes of these classes, Brent will cover the basics of JKD concepts, depending on student interest and rate of progression. The weapons portion of the curriculum will derive heavily from Giron arnis escrima (Bahala Na Club, Stockton, California), in which Brent graduated from in 2006 while living in California, with current training incorporated from Kalis Ilustrisimo and the Inosanto-La Coste system.
Brent Matsuda’s Instructors (past and present) include:
- Guro Louie Lindo,Vancouver, BC
- Guro Ed Wong, Vancouver, BC
- Grandmaster Tom dy Tang, Vancouver, BC
- Guro Dan Inosanto, Los Angeles, CA
- Guro John Maidment, Los Angeles, CA
- Grandmaster Tony Somera, Stockton, CA (deceased)
- Grandmaster Dexter Labanog, Sacramento, CA
- Master Michael Giron, Stockton, CA
Brent is a graduate of the Bahala Na Stockton school (2006)
Where he trained with several Instructors for five years prior to the separate formation of Bahala Na Martial Arts, Bahala Na Multi-style, and Original Giron Escrima. All are instructors to whom he credits his training regardless of current ties and affiliations. These include, but are not limited to: Guros Terry Joven, June Gotico, Gene Inis, Edward Talisayan, Lawrence Motta, Joel Juanitas, Kirk McCune.
There are several other instructors with whom I have trained over the years; the ones listed above are the most current and consistent within the last 10 years and do not include those prior to my training in the JKD/Jun Fan system (e.g., kung fu, ninjutsu). Other instructors will be listed as this website is updated. Apologies to those who may take offence to not being listed at this point (nothing personal).
